Its been a long time...

debris piles

Fire season is once again looming. I've been lucky enough to have a friend cut down a few trees, limb up others, and attack the underlying brush.

This has left lots of debris piles strewn across my property.

Originally, I was going to use my little wood chipper (barely visible in front of the barn,) but quickly found its just not able to do this much work. (Neither am I.)

The debris pile in the rear of the above photo is about 8' tall, and there are many more piles surrounding the house which are equally as high.

So... I ordered a debris bin, which should be here a week from Monday.

The last time I ordered a bin, was when my husband and I decided to clean out the junk the previous owner had left in and around the barn.

A day or so before retrieval, he decided we should take down the old light fixtures and throw them in too. He cut himself badly doing this, and I had to take him down to the local hospital for stitches. (He ignored my warning to wear gloves.)

After getting home, he ripped off his bandages declaring air was good for the wound. Wrong!

Several days later, he began feeling ill.

A few days later, I had to call 9-1-1.

He died of septic shock.

You can believe I always wear my gloves, as well as safety glasses, when I do anything "handymannish."

Anyway... I'm keeping busy, but wanted to wish a Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there!

I'm sorry this brings back that memory for you. I hope you're healing. Thank goodness you wear gloves so you don't have to do that kind of healing.

So nice to "see" you, though. Thanks for stopping by. I do think of you often.

Hi Squirl!
I'm not dwelling on this bad memory, just keeping on moving.
Nice to 'see' you too!
Who knows... I might just find a Buddha stashed in the underbrush we're clearing???

I read your blog post to the Hubs just now and his response was. "Hmm, I probably would have done the same thing" (about not wearing gloves AND removing the bandage). Duh, that's why I read it to him. Do I know him or what?!? I have to get on him constantly at work for not wearing his goggles when he uses the table saw. Grrrr.

Happy Mother's Day!!!

I hope you're not doing debris work today. Did PJ and your daughter come up to visit you?

I love the verification word you were given Bucky! I'm so glad to 'see' you this Mother's Day. Hope your cats bought you flowers (or at least dragged some home?)
SoozieQ (which is how I still think of you,) nice to 'see' you too!
I think there was waaaay too much testosterone goin' on in San Lorenzo (back in the day.)
No debris work today, just watering.
PJ and his mama have been living here for quite some time now. My Mother's Day gift was that they went out for the day! Ahhhhh, peace and quiet!

Ah... fire season. It looks to be a "good" one this year.... Our season doesn't "start" until July..... and he's been on multiple fires every week for the last month.... doesn't seem right, does it?

Remember... it's all about defensible space.... that's what those fire pros tell me....

Nice to hear from you K!
I always think about you and your family this time of year.
You're so right about defensible space!
I'm only about a mile from the nearest CDF fire station, but they're often working big fires elsewhere...
Its up to the property owner to do the best they can, and do it right.

It really is true. You can tell by the property if the house can be saved..... of course, it doesn't make for a good argument when I ask for a fire pit for Mother's Day....

Hot Stuff has vowed to never fight another fire in California... but he says he might make an exception for Northern California.... he's been on some good fires in the Susanville area and he loves the Cedarville area.

Hi K, I read about your fire pit request on your blog. From your posted pictures, it looks like you have plenty of clear space to have one!
Maybe you could build a big pond around it???

I'm in Northern California, between Yosemite and Lake Tahoe. We definitely don't want to tick off any Montana firemen, or any firemen for that matter. We rely on our CDF for all sorts of things other than fires. Poor guys (and girls) are out there doing everything the local Sheriff doesn't... including picking up old people that fall and can't get up!!! Could be me someday.

So, um, checking in.... knowing you got a debris bin and now knowing some of that history... um, everything ok around there?

Hi again K!
Everything is fine here. Just doing the fire safety 'thing.'

The debris bin has come and gone. Got the thing packed full, and there's only a couple of small piles left over.

I'm debating whether to order a smaller bin, or get the blade sharpened on my chipper... talk about lazy!

Hope your Mother's Day brought you new reasons to be glad you're a mother!!
