Nothin' Looks Sadder Than...

My grandmother's house in Rochester, New York

There's nothing sadder than holiday decorations displayed after said holiday.

Since my family has pushed Christmas forward, and now celebrates on Christmas Eve, I'm ready to dismantle and store things on December 25.

I have to force myself to hold off until New Years Day, which I did.

Well... I thought I did, until I spied my Christmas blocks (which spell out Merry Christmas) still sitting on my kitchen window sill.

OK, this happens every year. There's always something which escapes detection for a few days.

So yesterday (January 6) I was enjoying the almost 70 degree weather on the deck, and when I turned around to re-enter the house there was a wreath still hanging by the door!

It's packed away now, but I'm expecting to find something else still displayed in the next few days...

Gosh I hope not.

We were all sick just after Christmas and I fianlly got everything put up two days ago. Except for that small tree in the foyer window. I have to climb up on the 8 ft ladder which is 2 feet too short to get it down.
*sigh* Guess I should do that now.

You can absolutely come over!
Supposedly we'll be down to 29 degrees tonight though.
My husband isn't big into holidays, and doesn't even notice what I put out. Luckily he doesn't care what new ornaments I buy either.

kat-
I'm so sorry to hear you were sick! Not good timing...
Please be careful getting that small tree down.

Hey! You Ok ?
Forgetting things are part of our life style. No use thinking about it.

Ah, our decorations are still all up... well those that haven't fallen down yet. Damn gravity and cheap tape! I figure that we'll get around to taking things down around... 4th of July?

I just noticed yesterday (as I was putting up birthday balloons) that the little holiday banner my SIL made for us is still hanging proudly in the den. Oooops. *sigh* I hope it's just a sign of holiday overkill, and not age...!

I didn't even bother to decorate this year. Not sure why.

You could always write down what you put up and where as you decorate. Then you could check it off as you take it back down. That is, if it really matters all that much.

I've seen people who not only leave their outside lights up (I admit they're a pain to put up, why take 'em down) but they keep turning them on, until at least March...

I'm fine, thanks!
I believe what happens is that I get so used to seeing the decorations that I no longer really see them.
I'm not worried about this, just commenting on the situation.

OK, now I feel much better!
"Damn gravity and cheap tape," I love it!

Aha, I'm so not the only one!
"Holiday overkill" works for me.

Yeah, if you're not home to do it, the decorations will likely still be up when you return!
I miss you too- will be blog-visiting today... I need to catch up big-time!

I'm already an anal list-maker, so this would take the fun out of the spontaneity of it all!
I've noticed people who leave their lights up year-round too, which is probably why I don't do outside lights... actually, there's no-one close enough to see them out here in the boonies.

Yes, I'm in California too, up between Yosemite and Tahoe.
The weather has been a little too nice. I'm waiting for the proverbial 'other shoe to drop.'

I just wish someone else would decorate and un-decorate for me. I truly hate it. For the past couple y years I haven't put anything out, but with the my Niece and Nephew coming around, I suppose I'll have to get back into the swing of things.

Glad to see you're back!

We all missed you :-)

I did that with a Christmas bell on the front door last year. It stayed all year on the door. I forgot to put it away this year too, so I have a feeling it will be there for another year.

You know they do have people who specialize in decorating people's homes for the holidays. Probably pricey, but what the heck!
Thanks, I'm happy to be back, but I likely won't be posting so often as I used to. With my slow dial-up modem it takes me two days alone to visit and comment on my favorite blogs.

nina-
Aha, another door decoration left hanging!
I'm usually in a hurry going in and out of the door, which is why I didn't notice the wreath until just recently. You too?

So many people seem to leave their lights up... why not?
My ex-in-laws left their lights up for many years, and when they had their home painted, the contractor just painted over the cords!
I'm still not sure how I feel about that!!!

A stocking? That's kind of hard to miss!
Sort of makes you wonder what else might be still left out.
